Novobiocin-tetrathionate broth: a medium of improved selectivity for the isolation of Salmonellae from faeces.

چکیده
The selective cultivation of bacteria by incorporating chemicals in the media depends on supplying a substance which either stimulates the growth of the species to be isolated or inhibits unwanted species. Tetrathionate is a good selector of Salmonellae in faeces culture, and is believed to act in both ways. Tetrathionate reducers, such as Salmonellae, flourish in broth containing it, whereas a high concentration of tetrathionate inhibits many other faecal organisms (Knox, Gell, and Pollock, 1943). Unfortunately, however, members of the Proteus group are powerful tetrathionate reducers, and when they

Efficacy of different selective media for the isolation of salmonellae from faeces.
Comparative results obtained in isolating salmonellae from faeces by the use of tetrathionate broth, MS, and MM enrichment medium are given. The best results were obtained by tetrathionate broth prepared from infusion broth. The MS as well as the MM medium increased the total number of positive results.

Seven-thousand-and-thirty-six specimens of faeces were examined for Salmonellae using three enrichment culture media in parallel.Rappaport's magnesium chloride malachite green broth medium proved superior to selenite F and tetrathionate broths in the recovery of a wide variety of Salmonella serotypes. However, it was inferior to selenite broth in the recovery of Salmonella typhi.A higher recove...

A three-phase study was conducted to compare Hektoen enteric agar (HE), Rambach agar (Ra), SM-ID medium (SM), xylose-lysine-Tergitol 4 agar (XLT4), novobiocin-brilliant green-glycerol-lactose agar (NBGL), and modified semisolid Rappaport-Vassiliadis medium (MSRV) for the recovery of nontyphoid salmonellae from stool specimens. After evaluation of the first two phases, which resulted in the elim...

The efficiencies of three enrichment broths and four plating media for isolation of enteric pathogens were compared from 1,117 stool specimens. Direct streaking proved to be inferior to enrichment, detecting only 50% of the salmonellae and 61% of the shigellae. By contrast, Selenite Broth (SF) found 90% of the total salmonellae isolates and 82% of the shigellae isolates. Gram-Negative Broth (GN...
متن کاملSecondary selective enrichment of salmonellae from naturally contaminated specimens by using a selective motility system.
A selective motility medium was used as a secondary selective enrichment medium to examine specimens naturally contaminated with salmonellae. The medium, incubated at 37 degrees C, was inoculated from either selenite brilliant green sulfa enrichment broth or Müller-Kauffman tetrathionate broth, both of which had been incubated at 42 degrees C. The use of the selective motility medium resulted i...
